Smyrna, My Beloved

«Smyrna, My Beloved» by Mimi Denissi

An aristocrat from Smyrna remembers and longs for her life there. Her husband, a fanatical Greek and Venizelist, like her father and her children, live with the dream of the Great Idea. His brother and his family, successful merchants, Royalists and Asia Minor fanatics want Smyrna to be autonomous. The relations between the two families, their harmonious coexistence with Turks and Levantines, their unrequited, forbidden loves, their feasts, their songs, their dreams, dominate the play, as do the historical events that affect everyone’s life in their absence, from the arrival of the Greeks as liberators to the destruction of the unique city and the forced emigration. Through the story of the family, the story of the town unfolds.
